I'm disappointed in Jalopnik lately.

It seems like the majority of the content has gotten rather small-minded and snarky for the sake of being snarky. There was a point at which I thought it was enough to have personality and be endearingly entertaining, but it's denigrated into something feeling much more like high school. Am I alone in feeling this way?

There's also the whole gray thing, even though I've asked at least 3 times.

It depends who is reporting IMO. Out of the main Jalopnik cast, I only tend to read Mate and Patrick. I'm kind of bored of everyone else for the reasons you gave. Fortunately there are a bunch of interesting sub blogs which compensate.

I don't visit the Jalopnik front page any more. There's much more interesting things here on Oppo.

I think I may start doing. It seems like half the frontpage posts are here anyway.

Community is still great of course.

It's Gawker mate.. It's a shame, but that's how it is.. there's a reason I hardly ever visit the FP anymore.. Máté and Patrick do cool stuff though, so does Travis occasionally..

Now if only they'd address a few other issues with Oppo:
- When visiting the site on my phone, and composing a post, the cursor jumps over and starts mangling the first word I type. E.g.: If I type "One", it writes out "neO".
- There's still no way to flag a post/comment as being spam.
- The side bar seems to be updated almost randomly. It really should show the "most popular recent" posts or something.

Snarky is what we do best.....but then again, we mostly avoid FP and snark amongst ourselves.

I never used to post, I have been reading it for years though and I have seen lots of stories start in oppo or a post. I give the front page a look sometimes but my bookmark is to oppo.

this is multiplied by a factor of at least 10 within the comments.

where once there were interesting adult conversations, it's deteriorated into a gawker-esque pissing contest.

I have noticed there is a lot of incorrect information getting passed around and yes the general tone of things has started to go the way of you tube commenting. :( I just want a place to read about cars n stuff. We need more quality content because I can only watch so many Russian dash cam, Oakland side show, Cars & Coffee and asshat driving videos

Yeah mobile needs work for sure. The most annoying thing for me is that the website loads, I click a story, and milliseconds before I click or sometimes even after, the commercial shows, moving the link I was trying to click on away and putting another story right under my mouse.

I'm with you, just don't mention any of this on the FP, or they will put you back in the grays.

The FP is like the cool kids club.

What would you rather see? How would you improve it? You could try writing for the FP yourself. I'm serious, not snarking. They do share a bit from Oppo there, especially on slow days. Be the change you want to see in the FP, or something.

Oh, how heroes fall. Jalopnik was a huge influence in my life because it was an excellent car enthusiast site. I've said it before but apparently no one cares - what the FUCK is with irrelevant articles making it on what should be a proud list of automotive achievements and related useful/interesting things?? Front page currently has some CNN doomsday vid and some deal for Apple cables (not even car kits); I've seen 4 irrelevant links per page before. Here's 3 reasons why this is inexcusable:

1. Copious amount of EMPTY BLANK SPACE on the left for all shitty links if we really want that so bad

2. The very reason for the existence of all these subblogs is to cater to those people specifically. Why the fuck does Foxtrot Alpha exist if non-car related shit from there gets put into Jalopnik, drives me insane

3. This whoring for money (what else is this shit for apart from the clicks right) IS affecting the writing. I've seen posts by companies, I don't care about the StackSocial one because they're just pushing those stupid cables but in the past I've seen sponsored posts about cars - really?! On a site that brags about not withholding info (I forget the word used) if manufacturers ask them to and related - how long will that last when their posting is not impartial to begin with?

Just so disappointing.

I'm not saying there's never quality content at all. There surely is some - it's just buried under the steaming mountain of buzzfeed-esque titles. The problem is that while the content number may have gone up, quality has gone down (on average, at least).

The whole asshat thing gets overplayed. Kinda like today, posting 2 articles about a BMW driver. We got it on the first article. But to continue with another post about his "explanation " just seems to jump on the guy more. It feels really high school-ish. I definitely agree with that.

It's so frustrating!!! I thought they'd be the LAST website to sell out, I mean the damn slogan is Drive Free or Die there used to be so much pride there in the pure auto love

Most of the comments on my recent FP article were pretty decent actually, including the ones that disagreed with me. I don't mind if people disagree and want to tell me so in a reasonable manner.

Then I read the comments on Facebook when Jalopnik posted it there, and wow, what a flame fest. I won't even comment on my article there - it's not worth the hassle.

I'd rather not see irrelevant shit on a car enthusiast website at the very least use the massive blank space on the left if daddy gawker wants those clicks so badly

i think youre referring to your review on your brz?

if yes, its likely because the jalopnik readership has yet to become jaded by the car. (i have no experience in one.) hopefully the car won't go the way of the miata or 911 and thereby instigate tired back-and-forths by those who love the car and those who love to hate it.

agree that dissenting posts, if not pure conjecture and opinion, are useful and can stimulate discussion, but its the one-lined "this sucks" type responses that make the comments so difficult to read these days.

Yep, that's the one. The Facebook comments are exactly what you're talking about, unfortunately. That's why I'm not even going there. The only way to win is not to play. Fortunately the comments on this site have been civil.
